A Cozy Afternoon Thrifting in Middletown

Sometimes the best adventures are the ones that don’t require a full tank of gas or a packed schedule—just a little curiosity and a free afternoon.

This week, we stayed close to home and went thrifting in Middletown, stopping by Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Goodwill. It ended up being one of those unexpectedly lovely afternoons—the kind that feels easy and a little nostalgic.

ReStore Finds (and a Few “What Ifs”)

ReStore always feels like a quiet treasure hunt.

There were rows of furniture—solid wood tables, oversized armchairs, the kind of pieces that make you pause and think, could this work somewhere in my house? Some items felt a little pricey, others were such a good deal it made you look twice.

One thing I always forget (until I’m there): prices often drop over time if things don’t sell. It gives the whole experience a bit of a “do I grab it now or risk it?” feeling.

Also, a quick note if you’re planning a visit—ReStore is only open Wednesday through Saturday, so it’s worth timing your trip.

Goodwill, and the Art of Browsing

Then we headed to Goodwill, which felt a little more fast-paced—in a fun way.

Rack after rack of clothes, shelves of housewares, books, and little surprises tucked in between. Even if you’re not looking for anything specific, it’s the kind of place where time slips by without you noticing.

I don’t usually shop for clothes in-store (I need tall sizes, which makes it tricky), but I still tried on a few things—no luck this time, but it felt fun to try anyway.

What really caught my eye was the shoe section. So many good options, and in great condition. Of course, every pair I loved wasn’t in my size… which feels like a very universal thrifting experience.

Why It Feels Like a Little Adventure

There’s something about thrifting that turns an ordinary afternoon into something a bit more memorable.

Maybe it’s the not knowing. Maybe it’s the possibility of finding something great. Or maybe it’s just more fun when you go with someone—your shopping bestie, someone who will tell you yes, you should absolutely get that (or gently talk you out of it).

It’s part treasure hunt, part conversation, part “what even is this?” moment—and somehow, it always feels a little lighter than regular shopping.

And, of course, there’s the bonus: you can often save a good bit compared to traditional stores, especially if you’re open-minded about what you might find.

We’d love to hear from you—
