A Day at the Philadelphia Zoo

We headed out from Middletown a little later than planned—around 11:30 am—but the drive to the Philadelphia Zoo still felt manageable. It’s a short-ish trip overall, though getting into the city (and especially heading back out later) came with some heavier traffic than we would’ve liked. Nothing unexpected for a city day, but worth factoring in if you’re trying to maximize your time.

When we pulled into the parking lot, it looked packed—they were literally pulling out the “lot full” sign as we drove in. Naturally, we braced for crowds… but once inside, it never felt overwhelming. The zoo is a bit smaller than you might expect for a major city, and in this case, that actually worked in our favor. It was easy to navigate, and we never felt like we were fighting through crowds to see anything.

Zoo360

The biggest hit of the day? Zoo360. My boys were completely into it—watching monkeys and a lemur run, jump, and climb through the mesh walkways above us. It adds this unexpected layer to the experience where you’re not just looking into exhibits—you’re looking up, scanning, waiting to see what might come overhead next.

Animals We Loved

The big cats were stunning! We also loved seeing the giraffes, zebras, and rhinos. Those classic zoo animals that somehow never get old.

One thing to note—the red pandas are no longer there, which was a bit of a letdown to realize once we arrived. If that’s something you’re expecting, it’s good to know ahead of time.

The spider exhibit ended up being a surprise favorite for my boys. It took a little patience (some of them are definitely hard to spot), but that almost made it more fun—like a mini scavenger hunt trying to find them tucked into their habitats.

And the bird building McNeil Avian Center Birds was one of those walk-through spaces that feels immersive. A nice change of pace from the outdoor exhibits and worth taking your time through. We loved it!

Food

  • We packed lunch, which worked out great and gave us flexibility

  • We did grab a snack inside, but it was definitely on the pricey side

  • Having a mix of both felt like the right balance

The Overall Feel

What stood out most was how easy the day felt. Even with a later start and a full parking lot, we never felt rushed or overwhelmed. The smaller size made it doable in a few hours, and the layout kept things moving naturally.

It’s one of those trips that works well when you want something simple, engaging, and just far enough out of your normal routine.

We left tired, happy, and already talking about what we’d want to see again next time.
