A Refreshing Trip to Delaware Art Museum

January can be a tough month. The holidays are over, it’s cold, it’s gray, and suddenly all the easy outdoor fun feels very limited. To be honest, sometimes I have to literally schedule things on the calendar and then let the calendar boss me around—otherwise I won’t actually leave the house. Luckily, I scheduled a visit to the Delaware Art Museum, and I’m so glad I did.
One of the first things I appreciated was how easy the whole outing felt. The museum is a straightforward drive for me, which already made it feel like a win before we even parked. No big production, no long travel day—just a simple change of scenery that felt refreshing.
Just the Right Size
If you’ve ever walked into a massive museum (I’m looking at you, Louvre) and felt overwhelmed—or dizzy from trying to see everything—this place is the opposite of that. The Delaware Art Museum is very manageable. Big enough to feel substantial, but not so large that you feel like you’re racing the clock or missing half of it.
And let’s be honest—sometimes you need a break. I loved that there’s a café right inside the museum, which made it easy to restock my blood sugar, sit down for a bit, and then keep going. You know from reading Our Adventures that I prioritize a snack on every trip, so the fact that it’s inside the museum earns bonus points for me. Must. Have. Snack.
Friendly Vibes & Approachable Art
The staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming, which always makes a difference. The art itself felt fun and approachable—interesting without being intimidating. While there aren’t many sculptures inside the museum, there are a few, and they also have additional sculptures outside on the grounds. It’s a nice little bonus while walking to and from your car.

The QR Code Audio Feature = A Favorite
Here’s a part I really loved.
I enjoy art, but I’m definitely no expert. What made this visit especially memorable for me was the artwork that included QR codes. I could pop in my earbuds, scan the code, and listen to more in-depth stories and explanations about the pieces. It felt like having a personal guide—without feeling formal and I could go at my own pace.
Honestly? Loved it. This feature made the art feel more accessible and more meaningful to me.
That said… real-life moment: my cellular reception wasn’t strong enough in parts of the museum to load the audio for everything. Darn. When it worked, it was fantastic, but I did miss out on some pieces because of that. Still worth mentioning—because when it did work, it really elevated the experience. And hey, maybe your cell service is better than mine!
A Beautiful Setting
The museum is located in a truly beautiful area, and I found myself enjoying the drive just as much as the visit. Driving up and down the surrounding streets, taking in the stunning homes, was a highlight for me—because admiring beautiful houses is one of my all-time favorite pastimes. If you know, you know.

Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for something to do in January that feels calm, interesting, and easy—this is a great option. The Delaware Art Museum offers a thoughtful experience without being overwhelming, a cozy place to spend a few hours, and just enough extras (hello, café and audio guides) to make it feel special.
