Where Can You Go When It's Cold Out? Rockwood Museum & Gardens

🌿 A Cozy Step Back in Time at Rockwood Park & Museum

This cold snap has really cramped my motivation to get out of the house. I wanted to do something—anything—that felt like a change of scenery, but without committing to a full day, a long drive, or freezing outside the whole time. So I started looking for indoor options that still felt like an outing… and that’s how I landed on Rockwood.

I picked Rockwood Park & Museum because it’s easy. Easy to get to, easy to fit into a small window of time, and easy to enjoy without much planning. And honestly? It ended up being exactly what I needed.

Tucked into Wilmington, Rockwood feels like a little slice of the English countryside hiding in plain sight. The mansion itself is beautiful—built in the mid-1800s in a Gothic Revival style, with steep gables and detailed trim that make you slow down and really look. It feels elegant, but not intimidating.

What surprised me most was how real it felt inside. The rooms aren’t overly staged or roped off in a way that feels distant. They’re set up to look lived in, like the family just stepped out for a bit. You get a sense of everyday life in the home—not just the fancy parts, but how the house actually functioned. I also appreciated that the story doesn’t stop with the family; Rockwood does a nice job highlighting the servants who kept everything running, which gives a much fuller picture of life at the time.

The tour is self-guided, which I personally love. (You can also catch a guided tour at set times.) Each room has an informational sign explaining how it was used and who used it, so you can move at your own pace—linger where you’re interested, breeze through where you’re not. No pressure, no rushing.

I didn’t spend as much time outside as I would have liked (cold weather problems), but I’m already planning to come back in the spring. The formal gardens, walking paths, and the historic ha-ha wall are all worth exploring. The ha-ha wall is one of those fun little details—a sunken barrier designed to keep animals out without blocking the view—that makes you appreciate how thoughtful the estate’s design really was. The park itself is free to enjoy and connects into local trails, so it’s easy to tack on a walk around the grounds once you’re already there.

And then there’s the spooky side of Rockwood… have you heard of their paranormal nights? The ghost tours add a whole other layer to the experience. Stories of unexplained sounds, sightings, and after-hours activity have made these tours really popular, and they tend to sell out quickly. Whether you’re a true believer or just enjoy a good story, it’s such a fun way to see the mansion in a completely different light. There is also a children's program and wellness program at Rockwood you may want to look into.

One thing I didn’t fully realize before visiting is how much Rockwood is still used today. The Carriage House has been turned into a charming event space and hosts everything from weddings and baby showers to nonprofit events, holiday gatherings, and corporate functions. I love that this historic place is still part of people’s lives in such meaningful ways.

💚A Favorite way to enjoy Rockwood: Do the self-guided (or guided) mansion tour first, then take a slow walk around the grounds (or plan a warm-weather return), and if you’re feeling adventurous, keep an eye out for a ghost tour or special event.

Rockwood is easy to overlook—but it’s absolutely worth a stop, especially if you’re looking for something low-key, local, and genuinely interesting.

📍 Local tip: Check the events calendar before you go, and when the weather cooperates, bring a picnic or plan a walk through the park afterward.
