A Morning at the Adventure Aquarium

Some days you plan an outing… and some days turn into a core memory.

This one? Definitely the second.

I’ll be honest—my pre-teen went into this one not convinced. He wasn’t excited. He didn’t think it would be “his thing.” But a friend was going so he reluctantly agreed.

It didn't take long for everything to change. I don't know if it was the energy, or the atmosphere, but he got pulled in. The type of in where everything is fascinating, every tank deserves a second look, and somehow you end up doing the entire place twice (we did, and I’d do it again).

The Things He Loved Most

The touch tanks were an instant yes. There’s something about that moment—hovering your hand over the water, a little unsure, a little brave—and then suddenly you’re touching a shark. Or a stingray. It feels big when you’re little. And honestly, it still feels a little magical as an adult.

The penguins were another story entirely. We stayed there longer than planned, watching them sun and swim. My son decided each one needed a name (naturally), and I don’t think we left until he felt confident he had a solid system going.

And then there was the Shark Bridge—the rope-style walk right over the shark tank. It’s just the right amount of thrill. He thought it was the coolest thing there.

Of course, the shark tunnel is one of those classic moments. You walk through, look up, and suddenly you’re surrounded—sharks, fish, everything moving quietly above you. It’s calm and a little awe-inspiring all at once.

Pace of the Day

We didn’t rush it.

We doubled back to favorites, lingered where it felt right, and let the day unfold a little slower than usual.

Getting There from Middletown

If you’re coming from Middletown, it’s an easy outing:

  • About 1 to 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on traffic

  • Straightforward drive, mostly. We did miss a turn, but that was on me.

Perfect for a morning trip that still gets you home before dinner (or just in time for takeout).

Food (Because It Matters!)

You can keep this part simple, which I always appreciate:

  • There are food options on-site if you want to grab something there

  • Or you can bring your own snacks or lunch, which is great for picky eaters (or just keeping things budget-friendly)

We did a mix, and it worked out perfectly.

A Few Small Tips

  • Reservations are recommended. They will limit entrance based on capacity.

  • Mornings feel a little calmer, especially on weekends.

  • Let your kids take the lead—it somehow makes everything more fun

  • Build in time to circle back… because you probably will (especially for those adorable stingrays)

  • Tickets online were cheaper than at the door. And if you're looking to do a few big sites in the area check out the Philly City Pass for an even better price.

We’ll Be Back

It’s not always easy to find something that feels fun, easy, and genuinely memorable—but Adventure Aquarium checked all the boxes.

And honestly, I think we still have a few more penguins to name.
